Mount Mitchell Summit Road Backcountry Loop

Technical routes around NC's highest peak

Difficult

The service roads that spider out from Mount Mitchell’s main summit access road tell a different story than the paved tourist route. FS Road 472 loops around the east side of the mountain, passing old fire tower foundations and maintenance facilities most visitors never see. The real challenge comes on the descent toward Black Mountain Campground — steep grades, loose rock, and washouts that’ll test your engine braking and line choice. Several technical sections require careful tire placement to avoid body damage.

This is difficult terrain that demands serious 4WD capability, low-range gearing, and drivers comfortable with steep, exposed sections. Weather changes fast at 6,600 feet — what starts as a clear morning can turn into fog-bound chaos by afternoon. Summer through early fall offers the best window, though even then, afternoon thunderstorms can make things sketchy. The payoff is solitude and views that stretch from the Blue Ridge to the Piedmont, earned through genuine technical driving.
