Shavers Mountain Ridge Road
High ridge technical challenge through WV peaks
Shavers Mountain Ridge Road runs the spine of one of West Virginia’s tallest ranges, connecting FR 92 to FR 44 along a gnarly ridgeline that’ll test your line choice and patience. This old logging road climbs to nearly 4,000 feet elevation, offering glimpses of the Allegheny Mountains through gaps in the dense spruce forest. The middle section around Thorny Flat features loose rock gardens and off-camber sections that separate the weekend warriors from serious backcountry drivers.
Rated difficult for good reason — stock vehicles need not apply. You’ll want aggressive tires, skid plates, and recovery gear for the technical rock sections and steep grades. Late spring through early fall provides the best conditions, though snow can linger into May at elevation. No permits required, but inform someone of your plans since cell service is nonexistent and help is hours away. The reward is access to some of West Virginia’s most remote high country and excellent ridge camping.
