Antelope Well Dispersed Camping
This primitive camping area sits in New Mexico’s remote Bootheel country, about 3 miles north of the actual border crossing at Antelope Wells. Scattered campsites among creosote and ocotillo with sweeping views of the Animas Mountains to the east. No facilities whatsoever — pack it in, pack it out. Popular with snowbirds seeking solitude and dark skies far from civilization. Border Patrol activity is common but they generally leave campers alone.
Access via Highway 81 to Antelope Wells Road, then 3 miles of maintained dirt — high-clearance recommended but not required in dry conditions. Avoid during summer monsoons when arroyos can flash flood. Cell service is nonexistent, and the nearest supplies are 90 miles away in Lordsburg. This is serious backcountry camping for self-sufficient folks only.
