Stunning landscape of volcanic rock pinnacles, balanced rocks, and natural stone sculptures rising from desert grasslands. The monument protects over 12,000 acres of unique geological formations created by ancient volcanic eruptions. Well-maintained trails range from easy nature walks to challenging backcountry routes through the rock forests. Visitor center with exhibits and trail maps.
Reached via Highway 181 south of Willcox — paved road all the way to the visitor center but gets twisty in the mountains. Bonita Canyon Campground inside the monument fills quickly in peak season. Great base camp for exploring the area’s mining history and Apache heritage sites. Best visited fall through spring when temperatures are moderate.
