Telegraph Pass

This 3,200-foot pass cuts through the Peloncillo Mountains along the Arizona-New Mexico border, offering sweeping views of the Animas Valley and surrounding desert ranges. The pass was named for an early telegraph line that crossed here, and remnants of old mining operations dot the surrounding hills. A rough dirt road continues south toward the border, passing abandoned mines and desert springs.

Access is via graded dirt roads that can become impassable after heavy rains. High-clearance recommended for exploring beyond the main pass. Popular with rockhounds and history buffs but sees little traffic. Water sources are unreliable – carry what you need.
