Adirondack Park Newcomb Lake Road to Santanoni Preserve

The Newcomb Lake Road follows a historic carriage route built in the 1890s for the Santanoni Great Camp, one of the Adirondacks’ most impressive wilderness estates. This wide, well-maintained dirt road winds five miles through pristine forest to Newcomb Lake, passing the ruins of the massive log and stone camp buildings that once hosted Gilded Age millionaires. The road ends at the lake’s edge where the restored gatehouse overlooks clear water with views of distant High Peaks reflecting in the surface.

This is an easy trail suitable for any vehicle with decent ground clearance, making it perfect for overlanders wanting Adirondack wilderness without technical driving. The packed dirt surface stays firm except during spring mud season. No permits required, but the preserve closes seasonally for wildlife protection (typically December through April). Primitive camping is available at designated sites near the lake. The area offers excellent fishing, canoeing, and hiking access into the surrounding wilderness. Expect decent cell service at the trailhead but none at the lake.
