Catskill Park Belleayre Mountain Fire Tower Access Road

This steep service road climbs 1,200 feet in just over 2 miles to reach the abandoned fire tower on Belleayre Mountain’s 3,429-foot summit. Originally built to service the tower, the rocky double-track becomes increasingly technical as it ascends, with loose shale sections and water bars creating natural obstacles. The route passes through dense hardwood forest before emerging onto the exposed summit ridge where the skeletal remains of the 1949 fire tower still stand guard over the northern Catskills.

Difficult rating reflects steep grades, loose rock, and seasonal closures. Stock high-clearance 4WD minimum, but low-range recommended for the steepest pitches. Road typically opens May through October, depending on conditions. No camping permitted, but the summit offers spectacular views across the Delaware County peaks. Gate at base may be locked — check with Pine Hill DEC office. This is a there-and-back challenge that tests both vehicle and driver on one of the Catskills’ most technical summit approaches.
