Allegany State Park Blacksnake Mountain Fire Tower Road
CCC fire tower road with three-state summit views
Blacksnake Mountain Fire Tower Road climbs 1,400 feet in just over 3 miles through some of the steepest terrain in western New York, following a rutted access road built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934. The final mile pitches upward at 18% grade over loose shale and exposed bedrock, requiring momentum and careful throttle control to prevent wheel spin on the polished stone surfaces. At the summit, the original 60-foot steel fire tower still stands, offering 360-degree views across the Allegany Mountains into Pennsylvania and Ohio.
This is technical 4WD territory demanding low-range gearing and rock sliders—the shale ledges will test your breakover angle and scrape anything hanging low. Best attempted in dry conditions from late spring through early fall when the road isn’t muddy or iced over. Park permits required, available at Red House entrance station. No camping at the tower, but Allegany offers excellent developed sites below. Cell service is good at the summit. The reward is standing above the canopy in one of New York’s most remote corners, watching hawks ride thermals over endless forested ridges.
