Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Road

Iron ore mining road through granite wilderness

Difficult

This forgotten mining road from the 1800s iron ore operations cuts 12 miles through the heart of Pharaoh Lake Wilderness, where granite ledges and exposed bedrock create technical challenges that have humbled plenty of confident drivers. The route starts near Crane Pond Road and winds through dense hardwood forest to reach the historic Pharaoh Lake, passing remnants of charcoal kilns and mine shafts from when this area fed the furnaces downstate. The notorious “Pharaoh Steps”—a series of granite ledges—demand precise wheel placement and often require spotters.

This is difficult terrain requiring experienced drivers with modified 4WDs, skid plates, and recovery points. Rock sliders are nearly mandatory for the granite sections. Late summer through early fall offers the best conditions when water levels drop and footing improves. No permits required but camping follows wilderness regulations. Bring extra fuel, first aid supplies, and GPS backup—the dense canopy kills reception and trail markers are sparse. You’ll earn spectacular wilderness solitude and some of the most challenging technical driving in the Adirondacks.
