This punishing climb gains 1,400 feet in just three miles, following the original carriage road built in 1871 to serve the grand Overlook Mountain House. The hotel burned down in 1924, but its concrete ruins still dominate the halfway point – a surreal reminder of the Catskills’ gilded age tourism boom. The final push to the fire tower involves loose rock and steep grades that separate the pretenders from the real mountain rigs.
High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, with low-range gearing essential for the steepest sections. The road gets technical quickly with embedded rock, deep ruts, and steep side slopes that demand attention. Best tackled in dry conditions from May through October – winter access is completely blocked by snow. No camping allowed, but the fire tower offers spectacular 360-degree views of the Hudson Valley and Berkshire Mountains. Woodstock provides all services at the base.
