Talladega National Forest Forest Road 515 Shoal Creek Technical Loop

Forest Road 515 cuts through some of the gnarliest terrain in Talladega National Forest, starting near Heflin and winding through the Shoal Creek drainage. The route kicks off with a deceptively easy gravel stretch before dropping into a series of rock ledges and creek crossings that’ll test your breakover angles. The real challenge comes at mile marker 4.2 where Shoal Creek carves through a granite slot canyon—you’ll need to pick your line carefully through house-sized boulders and flowing water.

This is solid intermediate to difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. Spring runoff turns crossings into mini-rapids, while summer offers the best conditions for rock crawling. No permits needed, but cell service disappears completely after the first mile. Dispersed camping is allowed throughout the forest, and you’ll earn some of Alabama’s most remote backcountry with old-growth hardwoods and legitimate solitude.
