Sumter National Forest Chattooga Ridge ORV Trail
Technical ridge running above the wild Chattooga.
The Chattooga Ridge ORV Trail represents the Forest Service’s attempt to concentrate off-road traffic away from sensitive river corridors while still providing technical challenges. This 18-mile network follows the spine of ridges above the famous Chattooga River, offering glimpses of the wild water below through hardwood canopy. The trail connects multiple difficulty loops, with the eastern section featuring rock ledges and steep climbs that separate casual riders from committed wheelers. Burrell’s Ford serves as the primary access point.
Difficulty ranges from moderate to expert depending on loop selection, with some sections requiring significant ground clearance and aggressive tread patterns. The technical rock sections can be brutal on sidewalls and differentials. Open year-round, but spring and fall provide the most comfortable temperatures for extended riding. Forest Service ORV permits required—purchase online or at nearby ranger stations. Designated camping areas available at Burrell’s Ford, with primitive sites scattered along the ridge system. This is legitimate technical terrain that rewards skill and punishes overconfidence.
