Grotto Canyon Pictographs Kananaskis Country
Hidden 2.5 miles up Grotto Canyon’s narrow limestone walls, these red ochre pictographs were painted by First Nations peoples hundreds of years ago on a smooth rock face 20 feet above the creek. The images include human figures, animals, and symbols whose meanings remain largely unknown. The canyon itself is a geological wonder — towering walls barely 10 feet apart in places, carved by millennia of water flow through the Canadian Rockies’ eastern slopes.
Park at the Grotto Canyon day-use area off Highway 1A east of Canmore. The hike follows the creek bed the entire way — easier on ice in winter with microspikes, more challenging in summer requiring rock hopping and potential wading. The canyon can flash flood during heavy rains. Pictographs are about 100 yards past the ice cave (dry in summer). Photography permitted but no touching. Bears frequent the area spring through fall.
