Forest Road 218 Chattahoochee River to Anna Ruby Falls

Granite gauntlet to twin waterfalls

Difficult

Forest Road 218 cuts a brutal line from the Chattahoochee River headwaters up to Anna Ruby Falls through some of the roughest terrain in Chattahoochee National Forest. This 8-mile granite-and-root obstacle course starts at the river crossing near Unicoi Gap and climbs 1,800 feet through rhododendron hell where trail builders clearly gave up trying to go around boulders. The notorious Tray Mountain washout at mile 4 has claimed more oil pans than any other spot in north Georgia—a jagged rock garden that forces most rigs into full articulation.

This is solid intermediate 4WD territory requiring skid plates, recovery points, and someone who knows their lines. Wet weather turns exposed granite into a skating rink and makes the creek crossings sketchy. Best tackled April through November when leaves are off and you can see the rocks trying to kill you. No permits but respect the wilderness boundary markers. Worth the beating for the twin falls at trail’s end and some of the most remote camping in Georgia’s mountains.
