Pine Mountain Trail Georgia State Route 190 Backcountry Extension

CCC-era fire roads through FDR's favorite park

Moderate

The backcountry extension of Pine Mountain Trail follows old Civilian Conservation Corps roads through FDR State Park’s most remote sections, climbing the ridge system that President Roosevelt himself once explored. These fire roads connect the original CCC camp ruins with modern trail networks, threading through second-growth forest and granite outcrops that offer glimpses of the Flint River valley below. The technical section near Dowdell’s Knob pushes steep grades and loose rock that separate weekend warriors from serious trail drivers.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles with good traction control — the clay-based soils turn greasy after rain and the granite sections demand precise tire placement. Stock trucks handle it fine in dry conditions, but wet weather calls for experienced drivers and recovery gear. Park entry fees apply, best accessed May through September. Limited dispersed camping available, but the historic lodge and cabins offer comfortable base camp options. This trail bridges Georgia history with solid technical driving in the state’s oldest park.
