Durgin Falls Technical Loop
Georgia's granite technical challenge
Durgin Falls hides in a granite maze 15 miles north of Helen, accessible only through a technical boulder field that’ll test your spotter skills and undercarriage armor. The route follows an old logging road that dead-ends at a 60-foot waterfall cascading over ancient granite formations. Rock slabs, tight squeezes between boulders, and steep climbs make this Georgia’s answer to Moab — just with more humidity and kudzu.
Difficult rating demands modified 4WD with skid plates, aggressive tires, and front/rear lockers recommended. Summer heat makes this miserable; tackle it November through March for best conditions. No permits needed, but respect private property markers along the approach. Fuel up in Helen — this is technical crawling that burns gas. What you earn is bragging rights to one of Georgia’s most challenging trails and a spectacular waterfall few ever see.
