Horseshoe Bend Colorado River Overlook

Point of Interest

Horseshoe Bend sits 1,000 feet above the Colorado River where it carves a perfect horseshoe-shaped meander around a massive sandstone formation. The overlook provides an unobstructed view straight down to the emerald river, with the curve stretching nearly 270 degrees. No barriers exist at the cliff edge, making it both spectacular and potentially dangerous. The short 1.5-mile round-trip hike from the parking area crosses slickrock desert.

Parking fills early during peak season (March-November), with afternoon crowds becoming extreme. Summer temperatures exceed 100°F with no shade on the trail. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting for photography. The new parking lot and facilities opened in 2019 but still overflow during busy periods. Cell service is generally available at the overlook.
