Natchez Trace State Park Backcountry Loop

Hidden CCC roads through West Tennessee hills

Easy

This lesser-known backcountry system winds through Natchez Trace State Park’s 48,000 acres via old Civilian Conservation Corps roads and modern maintenance tracks that most visitors never discover. The loop connects the park’s four lakes through rolling hill country, passing abandoned CCC camp foundations and crossing several seasonal streams. The route includes a technical descent to Cub Lake’s remote northern shore and climbs through dense forest to reach the old fire tower foundation on Maple Hill.

Easy to moderate difficulty makes this accessible to most high-clearance vehicles, though the Cub Lake descent requires careful line choice over loose rock. Spring and fall offer the best conditions with fewer bugs and comfortable temperatures. Park entry fee required, backcountry camping permitted at designated sites with advance registration. Cell service is decent near the main park areas but drops off in the backcountry sections. This trail offers a perfect introduction to Tennessee overlanding — manageable challenges, interesting history, and the chance to explore a state park most people only see from the paved roads.
