Homochitto National Forest Clear Springs Fire Road Complex

CCC stonework meets Mississippi creek crossings.

Moderate

The Clear Springs Fire Road Complex weaves 18 miles through Homochitto National Forest’s most remote section, where longleaf pines tower above seasonal creeks and forgotten Civilian Conservation Corps stonework. Built in the 1930s as fire suppression access, these interconnected forest roads cross Sandy Creek four times via low-water concrete fords that can run knee-deep after heavy rains. The highlight is the abandoned CCC stone bridge at mile 7, where crews once hauled equipment to build fire towers that still dot distant ridgelines.

Moderate difficulty with seasonal challenges — those creek crossings turn gnarly during spring runoff and summer storms. Stock high-clearance 4WD handles dry conditions fine, but low-range and all-terrain tires are smart when water’s running. Best tackled fall through early spring when creeks are manageable and bugs aren’t swarming. No permits needed, dispersed camping allowed at designated spots, and you’ll find solitude most weekdays. Bring your own water and expect zero cell service once you’re past the trailhead.
