Homochitto National Forest Red Bluff Trail

Mississippi's toughest creek crossing challenge

Difficult

The Red Bluff Trail cuts through the heart of Homochitto National Forest’s most challenging terrain, where red clay bluffs rise 200 feet above Foster Creek bottoms. This 18-mile loop follows old logging roads from the 1940s, crossing Foster Creek seven times before climbing the notorious Red Bluff grade—a 35% pitch that’s claimed more than a few differentials over the years. The trail passes the remnants of a 1930s CCC camp and connects to the historic Natchez Trace at milepost 41.5.

This is legitimate difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with low-range gearing and recovery gear mandatory. The creek crossings range from knee-deep in dry season to impassable during winter floods, making March through November the only viable window. No permits required, but fuel up in Meadville—it’s 45 minutes to the nearest gas station. Dispersed camping is allowed along the bluffs, offering some of Mississippi’s best sunset views over the Homochitto River valley.
