Allegheny State Park Administrative Roads

Elk country through New York's wilderness jewel

Moderate

Allegheny State Park’s backcountry opens up through a network of administrative roads originally built for fire suppression and timber management in the 1930s. The main artery follows Stone Tower Road past the abandoned CCC camp foundations before connecting to a web of seasonal roads that penetrate the Allegany Wild Forest. Gate combinations change annually, but foot traffic is allowed year-round, and some roads open to vehicles during specific hunting seasons. The route to Bear Creek offers the best chance of spotting the reintroduced elk herd that now calls these 65,000 acres home.

Most roads require high-clearance but stay manageable for stock SUVs during dry conditions—spring mud season turns everything into a slippery mess. Primitive camping is allowed at designated backcountry sites along Quaker Run Road, though advance reservations are required through the park office. The road network closes to vehicles October-December during hunting season, but snowmobile season (January-March) reopens select routes. You’ll find genuine wilderness solitude just hours from Buffalo, plus some of the best wildlife viewing in the Northeast.
