Worcester Range Backbone Trail
High ridgeline timber roads through remote peaks
This high-elevation logging road system follows the Worcester Range spine from Mount Hunger north to Stowe Pinnacle, threading between private timber lots and state land through some of Vermont’s most remote backcountry. The route climbs through working forests where logging trucks still haul timber, crossing numerous stream drainages and skirting the western slopes of Mount Worcester. Technical sections include steep granite ledges near Stowe Pinnacle and boggy stream crossings that can swallow a stock vehicle to the frame rails.
Difficult terrain requiring 4WD with good ground clearance and aggressive tires. Mud season (March-May) makes this route nearly impassable, while summer and fall offer firm conditions for those willing to work for it. No permits required on state forest roads, but respect active logging operations and private property boundaries. Dispersed camping is possible on state land with Leave No Trace practices. This is backcountry Vermont at its most authentic—no facilities, no crowds, just you and the mountains the way loggers and hunters have known them for generations.
