Chickasaw Bluff Sand Ridge Defense Circuit
WWII training base ruins on Memphis' highest bluffs
Hidden in Memphis’ eastern suburbs, this network of sand roads winds through the remnants of Camp McCain, a World War II military training facility built on the ancient Chickasaw Bluff formations. The route connects a series of concrete observation posts and training bunkers scattered through what’s now mostly private hunting land, accessible via old military service roads that haven’t seen maintenance since 1946. The highest point offers views across the Mississippi River valley that German POWs once saw while clearing fields.
Moderate difficulty requiring 4WD during wet conditions when the sand turns to soup. The route crosses several private properties via historic easements—respect gates and posted signs. Dry seasons from late summer through winter provide the most reliable access. No permits required but hunting seasons can restrict access September through January. Bring plenty of water and navigation aids; the old military grid roads can be confusing. This is Memphis history most locals don’t know exists, preserved in concrete and sand.
