Nonconnah Creek Timber Bottoms Heritage Circuit

Timber heritage meets bottomland creek crossings.

Moderate

The old timber roads that fed Memphis sawmills still wind through Nonconnah Creek’s bottomlands, where cypress and tupelo gum create cathedral corridors between seasonal sloughs. This circuit follows logging spurs that once hauled virgin hardwood to the mills, crossing the creek multiple times through ford points marked by concrete splash guards from the 1940s. You’ll pass foundation ruins of the old Nonconnah Mill and navigate around massive stumps that mark where 200-year-old oaks once stood, their legacy roads now green tunnels through second-growth forest.

Moderate difficulty requires 4WD for the creek crossings, which can run 18 inches deep after rain. Spring floods make the route impassable March through May, but late summer through winter offers ideal conditions. No permits needed, but some sections cross private timber company land — stay on established roads. Pack insect repellent; the bottoms breed mosquitoes all summer. The experience connects you to Memphis’s timber heritage while testing your water-crossing skills in some of the Mid-South’s most untouched bottomland forest.
