Kisatchie National Forest Forest Road 142 Caroline Dormon Trail Extension
Longleaf wilderness access through bayou country.
Forest Road 142 cuts deep into the heart of Kisatchie’s Kisatchie Bayou Wilderness, following old logging tramways through some of Louisiana’s most pristine longleaf pine forest. The trail starts near the Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve and winds 14 miles through sandy two-track that alternates between high pine ridges and creek bottom hardwoods. Key challenge comes at mile 8 where Kisatchie Bayou must be forded — water level varies drastically with recent rains and can be knee-deep to your bumper.
This is moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially during wet seasons when the sandy sections turn to soup. Best tackled April through October when creek levels are manageable. No permits needed, but fuel up in Natchitoches — nearest gas is 25 miles out. Multiple primitive camping spots along the bayou offer genuine Louisiana wilderness solitude. You’ll earn views of untouched longleaf savanna that existed here for millennia before timber companies arrived.
