Albanian Alps Peaks of the Balkans Trail
Limestone peaks and forgotten villages
This 180-kilometer backcountry route threads through the Bjeshkët e Nemuna (Accursed Mountains) along ancient shepherd paths and communist-era logging roads. The trail connects isolated villages like Theth and Valbona through limestone karst terrain where switchbacks climb to 2,000-meter passes. Stone shepherd huts dot the landscape, and the Valbona River crossing requires careful timing during spring melt.
Serious 4WD with good ground clearance and rock sliders essential for the technical limestone sections. Best attempted June through September when snow clears the high passes. No fuel stations exist for long stretches, so carry jerry cans and spare parts. Wild camping is generally accepted, and guesthouses in villages provide hot meals and local raki. This route delivers untouched Balkan mountain culture few outsiders ever experience.
