Garden of the Gods Wilderness Area Gravel Road

Ancient bluffs and forest roads in Shawnee country

Easy

The Garden of the Gods Wilderness Area sits in the heart of Shawnee National Forest, where 320-million-year-old sandstone bluffs create some of Illinois’ most dramatic terrain. This network of forest service roads cuts through dense hardwood forest and alongside towering rock formations, with the main artery being Forest Road 114 that connects multiple overlooks and primitive camping areas. The route passes Camel Rock, a distinctive sandstone formation that’s been a landmark for centuries, before winding down to the Ohio River bottoms.

The roads are well-maintained gravel suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though muddy conditions after rain can make things interesting. Spring and fall offer the best driving conditions and scenery, while summer brings heavy canopy cover and humidity. No permits required, but dispersed camping follows Leave No Trace principles. You’ll find genuine Illinois wilderness here—300-foot bluffs, old-growth forest, and solitude that’s rare this close to civilization. Pack water and expect zero cell service once you’re committed.
