Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters

Water Source

Ruby Lake sits at 6,000 feet in Ruby Valley, sustained by artesian springs that create 37,632 acres of freshwater marsh in the middle of sagebrush country. The headquarters has a visitor center, interpretive displays, and most importantly for overlanders, a reliable water spigot available 24/7. Wildlife viewing is exceptional year-round, with massive waterfowl migrations spring and fall.

Located 60 miles southeast of Elko via Highway 229 and Ruby Valley Road. The last 15 miles are well-maintained gravel suitable for any vehicle. Water spigot is outside the visitor center building, accessible even when the office is closed. No camping allowed on refuge lands, but dispersed camping is available on adjacent BLM land.
