Bell Mountain Wilderness Pine Ridge Technical Loop

Missouri's most technical granite crawling

Expert

Bell Mountain throws Missouri’s hardest punches at you right from the trailhead, where granite boulders the size of pickup trucks force you into technical crawling maneuvers that’ll make you question your line choice. This loop cuts through the Bell Mountain Wilderness via old logging roads and cattle paths, hitting Pine Ridge’s notorious rock gardens before dropping into Ottery Creek’s multiple water crossings. The real test comes at Shut-In Gap, where a 30-degree granite slab forces most rigs to take the chicken line around to the right.

This is expert-level territory that demands lockers, armor, and a spotter who knows what they’re doing. Spring floods make Ottery Creek impassable, so stick to late summer through fall when water levels drop. No camping allowed in the wilderness itself, but dispersed sites along Forest Road 2221 work for base camp. You’ll earn bragging rights on Missouri’s most technical terrain, but expect body damage and long recovery times if you bite off more than you can chew.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle this trail?

No, absolutely not. This trail requires a built rig with front and rear lockers, heavy armor plating, and serious rock crawling experience. Stock vehicles will get destroyed on the granite boulders.

Is this trail open during winter months?

Technically open year-round, but best season is August-October when water levels are manageable and weather is stable. Winter conditions make the already-dangerous granite slabs extremely treacherous.

Do I need any permits for Bell Mountain Wilderness?

No permits required since this is Mark Twain National Forest land. However, group size is limited to 12 people and motorized travel is restricted to designated routes only.

What's the hardest obstacle on this loop?

The granite waterfall sections where you're crawling up wet rock faces at extreme angles. One wrong move sends your rig tumbling down 20+ feet of solid granite.

How deep are the water crossings?

Creek crossings vary from 6 inches to 3 feet deep depending on recent rainfall. The granite creek beds are slippery as hell, so waterproof everything and expect to get wet.
