Sprengisandur Route F26 — Goðafoss to Hrauneyjar Across the Icelandic Highland Desert
Outlaw road across Iceland's black highland heart.
Sprengisandur was the old outlaw road. Medieval Icelanders and outcasts crossed this black gravel desert between Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull to dodge the law and the sheep farmers. You pick it up near Goðafoss, drop onto the F26, and within a couple of hours you’re in a moonscape. The track passes Aldeyjarfoss’s basalt columns, crosses open lava plains, and reaches the Nýidalur huts at the halfway point, then runs on through braided glacial rivers to the Hrauneyjar Highland Center. Plan for fords on the way. Some are shallow gravel crossings, but they swing with meltwater and rain.
The F26 is legally 4×4-only, and rental contracts usually forbid river crossings, so read your paperwork. It opens late June to early July depending on snowmelt, and closes by mid-September. Check umferdin.is and road.is before you leave. There’s no fuel on the crossing, so fill up at either end, and carry water and a full tank for the washboard. Cell service is patchy to none, and the weather can swing from sun to horizontal sleet in an hour. Camping is restricted to designated sites, so stay in the Nýidalur or Hrauneyjar huts and campgrounds. You get a wide-open highland with almost no one on it. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock 4Runner or Tacoma do Sprengisandur?
Yes. Any real 4x4 with decent ground clearance and all-terrain tires can handle the surface, which is washboard gravel, lava rock and some soft sand. The limiting factor is the unbridged fords, not the terrain, so check your vehicle's wading depth and the river conditions before you go.
When is F26 Sprengisandur open?
Usually from late June or early July until mid-September, sometimes into early October. Snowmelt and mud decide the opening date each year, and the road is closed in winter. Check road.is for current status before committing, because early-season rivers run high with glacial melt.
Do I need a permit or pay a fee to drive F26?
No permit or toll is required to drive F26. It is a legally designated F-road, so 4x4 is mandatory and leaving the marked track is illegal, with heavy fines for off-road driving. If you're in a rental, check your contract, since most Icelandic rental insurance excludes river crossing damage.
What's the hardest part of the route?
The unbridged glacial river fords. Depth and current change through the day, and are usually worst in the afternoon after the sun has been melting the glaciers. Between fords, expect long stretches of rough washboard and rocky lava terrain, and nothing here is technical. Walk any crossing you're unsure of, and wait for lower water if needed.
Is there fuel, cell service, or camping along the route?
There is no fuel and no cell service between the two ends, so fill up before you go. Hrauneyjar has fuel at the southern end, and rough driving burns more than you'd expect. Camp only at designated sites such as the huts at Nýidalur, since vehicle-based camping outside campsites is not allowed. Leave your plan with safetravel.is before you head into the highlands.
