Holland Track
Gold rush ghosts and red dirt dreams.
The Holland Track cuts a 373-mile scar through Western Australia’s forgotten gold country, following the same wheel ruts that prospectors carved in 1893 when they pushed handcarts loaded with dreams from Coolgardie to the York district. What started as a desperate shortcut for miners dodging railway fees became one of Australia’s most enduring outback routes—600 kilometers of red dirt, ghost towns, and endless wheat stubble that’ll test your patience more than your differentials.
Any stock 4WD with decent ground clearance can handle this moderate-rated track, though the challenge isn’t technical—it’s mental. The Holland Track demands three to four days of commitment through country where cell service died decades ago and the nearest fuel might be 200 kilometers behind you. The surface stays dirt and gravel throughout, with occasional creek crossings that rarely run deep but can bog unwary drivers in sand. Coolgardie serves as the logical starting point, where you’ll top off fuel and water before pointing south toward Broomehill. The track peaks at just 1,640 feet elevation, but the real navigation comes from following heritage markers and avoiding the maze of farm tracks that branch off through the wheatbelt.
April through October offers the only sensible window—summer heat will cook you and winter rains turn sections into impassable bog. Dispersed camping is allowed along most of the route, with old telegraph stations and roadhouse ruins providing natural stopping points. Water crossings are seasonal but manageable, though carrying extra fuel and water isn’t optional—it’s survival. The Department of Parks and Wildlife manages portions of the track, but much runs through private pastoral stations where respect for gates and livestock takes precedence over right-of-way.
The Holland Track rewards drivers who understand that some adventures are about covering ground, not conquering obstacles. You’ll share campsites with ghosts of failed settlements, follow wagon ruts still visible after 130 years, and cross country where the next human contact might be days away. It’s overlanding distilled to its essence: just you, your rig, and enough red dirt to remind you why the goldfields broke more men than they ever made rich. Have a dirty day.
