Krafla Geothermal Rim Circuit F862
Active volcanic terrain where Earth's crust bleeds.
F862 circles the Krafla volcanic system through terrain that last erupted in the 1980s, where the road surface cracks from ongoing geothermal activity and steam vents mark active magma chambers below. This technical loop passes Leirhnjúkur’s sulfur fields and Víti crater lake, threading between fresh lava flows and unstable ground where the Earth’s crust remains thin and unpredictable.
Difficult route requiring experienced drivers and robust 4WD vehicles due to sharp volcanic rock, steep grades, and potentially hazardous geothermal areas. Road conditions change seasonally as freeze-thaw cycles crack the surface, and some sections may be temporarily closed due to volcanic activity. Best accessed June through September with full recovery gear, extra tires, and emergency supplies. The circuit provides unmatched access to Iceland’s most active volcanic processes but demands respect for the volatile environment.
