Öskjuleið Askja Access Route F88
Highland volcano access through outlaw desert
F88 Öskjuleið punches 85 kilometers into the Ódáðahraun lava field — the “Desert of Misdeeds” — to reach Askja volcano’s massive caldera. This is the primary access route to Víti crater lake, cutting across lunar landscapes that NASA used for Apollo mission training. The route passes through multiple river crossings including the notorious Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river system, with braided channels that change seasonally and can trap the unprepared in quicksand-like glacial silt.
Difficult rating demands serious 4WD capability with high clearance, recovery gear, and river crossing experience — multiple vehicles recommended for safety. Open July through early September only when rivers are lowest, though conditions change daily based on glacier melt. No services exist for 85+ kilometers — carry extra fuel, food, and emergency communications. The reward is accessing one of Iceland’s most active volcanic systems and experiencing the raw highland wilderness that shaped Viking-era outlaw legends.
