Soldier Creek Trail
Pine Ridge cavalry route with serious creek crossings
Soldier Creek Trail cuts through some of Nebraska’s most rugged terrain in the Pine Ridge escarpment, following wagon ruts carved by cavalry units in the 1870s. The 18-mile route winds through deep creek beds, past towering sandstone bluffs, and over rolling prairie between Chadron and the South Dakota border. Watch for the historic Soldier Creek Station ruins at mile 8, where troops once watered their horses before the final push to Fort Robinson.
This is a legitimate moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD for the dozen creek crossings and rocky climbs through the breaks. Spring runoff can make crossings impassable, so stick to late summer through fall. No permits needed on this mix of state and private land, but respect gates and stay on established tracks. Pack extra water and fuel—cell service is nonexistent once you drop into the creek drainage.
