This is the only federally designated Back Country Byway in Nebraska, threading between towering grass-covered dunes and pristine wetlands where sandhill cranes stage by the thousands. Rated moderate due to sandy conditions that can trap inexperienced drivers, especially after rain. Any high-clearance vehicle handles it fine in dry conditions, but 4WD becomes essential when the sand gets soft or wet. Best driven May through October when roads are firmest. No permits required, but respect private ranch gates. Fuel up in Valentine before starting – there’s nothing out here but grass, water, and some of the most pristine prairie left in America.
