High Rock Canyon Road
Applegate Trail through towering volcanic canyon
High Rock Canyon slices a dramatic gash through the Black Rock Range in Nevada’s northwest corner, where ancient volcanic flows created towering walls that funnel you through a landscape unchanged since pioneer wagons struggled through here on the Applegate Trail. The road follows the historic emigrant route past Trego Hot Springs and centuries-old petroglyphs carved into dark basalt, with the canyon walls rising 800 feet on either side as you navigate between house-sized boulders that have tumbled from the rim above.
This is moderate 4WD territory requiring high clearance and good ground clearance for rocky sections, though most stock trucks handle it fine with careful line choice. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer brings blazing heat with little shade in the canyon. No permits required, and dispersed camping is allowed throughout. Fuel up in Gerlach beforehand—this 50-mile route through genuine Nevada backcountry rewards you with solitude, ancient history, and some of the most dramatic desert canyon scenery in the state.
