Clan Alpine Mountains Loop

Technical ghost town exploration above Dixie Valley

Difficult

The Clan Alpine Mountains Loop takes you through some of Nevada’s most forgotten territory, climbing from the Dixie Valley floor to over 8,000 feet through country that time forgot. You’ll pass the ruins of Fairview, a silver boom town that once had 2,000 residents, and navigate technical rock ledges that’ll test your line choice. The route connects old mining roads through the range, with spectacular views of the Stillwater Mountains across the valley and remnants of the narrow-gauge railroad that served the district.

This is difficult 4WD country with some genuine technical sections requiring good articulation and armor. The rock ledges near Fairview demand careful spotting, and the high-altitude exposure means weather can change fast. Lockers help but aren’t mandatory if you pick smart lines. Best from June through September when snow clears the passes. No permits required, but fuel up in Fallon and bring everything you need for 2-3 days. The solitude up here is absolute, and the night sky will remind you why Nevada earned its dark sky designation.
