Ghost Town Trail – Rochford to Mystic
Following gold rush wagon roads to ghost towns
This forgotten mining road connects the ghost towns of Rochford and Mystic through some of the Black Hills’ most historically rich terrain, following the same route that gold seekers and supply wagons used during the frenzied 1876 rush. The track passes the ruins of stamp mills, mine shafts, and miners’ cabins hidden in the ponderosa pines, with the highlight being the preserved Mystic Mine headframe that still stands sentinel over Rapid Creek. Creek crossings can be tricky during spring snowmelt, and several steep pitches require careful throttle control on loose granite decomposed rock surfaces.
Stock 4WD with good ground clearance handles this route without drama, though the rocky creek beds appreciate skid plates. Difficulty ramps up significantly in wet conditions when the clay sections become skating rinks. Prime season runs May through October before snow blocks the higher passes. No permits needed for day trips, but overnight camping requires forest service approval in designated areas only. Bring a metal detector if you’re into treasure hunting – old mining camps still yield period artifacts. The combination of Black Hills scenery and authentic gold rush history makes this a must-run for anyone interested in the real story behind Deadwood’s famous characters.
