Goblin Valley State Park
This geological playground looks like Mars had a bad acid trip. Thousands of mushroom-shaped sandstone formations called ‘goblins’ fill a natural amphitheater, creating a maze where kids and adults alike can spend hours exploring without trails or barriers. The formations range from tiny garden gnomes to towering trolls, all carved by wind and water over millions of years. Unlike most state parks, you’re encouraged to climb, touch, and explore freely.
The campground here is excellent – spacious sites with modern facilities and surprisingly good views of the surrounding desert. Access requires a few miles on good paved road from Highway 24. Spring and fall are ideal; summer days can be scorching with no shade among the goblins.
