Pinkham Canyon Road
Slot canyon technical challenge with mining history
Pinkham Canyon Road drops into a narrow desert wash system east of the Cholla Cactus Garden, where towering rock walls squeeze vehicles through passages barely wider than a full-size pickup. The route follows an old mining road through classic Mojave Desert terrain, past abandoned prospect holes and rusted equipment from the 1940s gold rush. The canyon’s tight confines and loose rock make spotting essential, especially at the narrows where one wrong move means body damage.
This is a technical route requiring solid 4WD skills and armor underneath – skid plates are mandatory. Stock vehicles with experienced drivers can make it, but expect scrapes and stress. The canyon can flash flood, so avoid during monsoon season or after heavy rains. October through March offers the best conditions. No permits required, but camping inside the canyon is prohibited. It’s a short but intense challenge that rewards drivers with solitude and genuine technical driving in one of Joshua Tree’s most remote corners.
