Jumbo Rocks Campground — Joshua Tree National Park
Jumbo Rocks is the real deal. Sitting at around 4,400 feet smack in the middle of Joshua Tree, it’s a 124-site campground buried in a labyrinth of massive rounded granite. The boulders aren’t just scenery — they’re your neighbors, your windbreak, and your climbing gym. Sites vary wildly; some are exposed, some are tucked into tight rocky alcoves. Pit toilets only, no water on-site, so carry what you need. Busy October through April with climbers and desert rats. Fire restrictions are enforced strictly.
Access is directly off Park Boulevard (the main paved road through JTNP), so any rig can reach it. First-come, first-served — no reservations. Get here before noon on a Friday in shoulder season or you’re out of luck. Cell signal is basically nonexistent. The Skull Rock Nature Trail starts right here if you want to explore the immediate geology on foot.
