Pemberton Icecap Alpine Circuit

Extreme alpine mining circuit beneath Pemberton Icecap

Expert

This brutal alpine circuit climbs through old-growth forest into the harsh realm beneath the Pemberton Icecap, where mining crews once extracted copper and molybdenum from claims scattered across glacial moraines. The route includes a hair-raising traverse of Wolverine Pass at 6,800 feet and a technical descent through Sphinx Creek valley, where rockfall and washouts regularly reshape the track. Several creek crossings require careful timing, and the final approach to the turnaround point at Terzaghi Dam offers stunning views of Mount Meager’s volcanic peaks.

Expert-level difficulty with serious exposure, loose rock, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Modified 4WD with skid plates, winch, and emergency gear absolutely essential. July through September only when snow clears. No permits needed but register with Pemberton RCMP before attempting. Nearest fuel is Pemberton village, and cell service disappears after the first 10 miles. This is serious backcountry that rewards experienced drivers with some of the most spectacular and unforgiving terrain in the Coast Mountains.
