Primitive Area Road 618 – Vulture Peak

Volcanic nightmare with gold rush history

Expert

PAR 618 punishes everything from your tires to your transmission as it claws 8 miles up the volcanic spine of the Vulture Mountains to within striking distance of 3,665-foot Vulture Peak. This gnarly BLM primitive road starts innocently enough from the Vulture Mine ghost town ruins—where Henry Wickenburg struck gold in 1863—but quickly turns into a rock-strewn nightmare of loose shale, off-camber sections, and exposure that’ll test your nerve. The final 2 miles to the peak turnoff climb through a moonscape of black volcanic rock with drop-offs that demand precise wheel placement.

Expert-level technical driving that’ll humble cocky drivers and send stock rigs packing. You need serious armor, recovery gear, and experience reading nasty desert terrain. Lockers and 35s minimum; many run 37s and still get body damage. No water, no cell service, no forgiveness—come prepared for self-recovery in 110°F heat. Best attempted October through March when temperatures won’t kill you during a breakdown. The reward? Some of the most remote desert solitude in central Arizona and bragging rights to one of the state’s toughest drives.
