Quebrada del Yeso – San Juan Backcountry

Gypsum canyon gauntlet to high-altitude lakes

Difficult

The Quebrada del Yeso track punches through San Juan’s most technical canyon terrain, where white gypsum walls tower overhead and the road surface changes from gravel to loose rock to sandy washes without warning. Starting near Iglesia, this route climbs relentlessly through increasingly narrow canyon walls before opening into the high puna where Laguna del Yeso reflects snow-capped peaks. Rock falls are common after storms, and the final approach to the lake requires careful line selection through boulder fields that’ll test both chassis clearance and driver patience.

This is proper difficult terrain demanding 4WD with low range, skid plates, and recovery gear—plus spare everything because help is 6 hours away minimum. Altitude hits hard above 3,500 meters, so acclimatize properly or risk altitude sickness. Best attempted March through May and September through November when snow clears but temperatures stay reasonable. Water sources exist but require purification. The reward is pristine high-altitude camping with vicuñas and flamingos for company, plus bragging rights on one of Argentina’s gnarliest backcountry routes.
