Canaan Loop Road
High plateau wilderness in the heart of coal country.
The Canaan Loop Road winds through 4,000-foot elevation tablelands that feel more like northern Canada than West Virginia. This 15-mile gravel circuit cuts through the heart of Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, crossing ancient peat bogs and skirting the edge of Dolly Sods Wilderness. The route passes through Freeland Road junction and climbs toward Cabin Mountain, where rutted two-tracks test ground clearance through rocky sections and seasonal mud holes.
Moderate difficulty with a few technical spots requiring high-clearance 4WD during wet seasons. Stock vehicles handle it in dry conditions, but ruts and rock gardens demand attention. Best tackled April through October when refuge roads are open. No permits needed for the loop itself, but dispersed camping opportunities abound on adjacent Forest Service land. You’ll earn views of the Allegheny Plateau that most West Virginians never see.
