Black Mountain Crest Trail — Clingmans Dome Road Viewpoint and Southern Appalachian High Country
Standing above 6,600 feet, the Black Mountain Crest in the Pisgah National Forest is one of the most dramatic high-country ridgelines in the eastern United States. Mount Mitchell — the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet — anchors this massif, and the surrounding ridge offers sweeping views across the Blue Ridge and into Tennessee. For overlanders running the Trans-America Trail through the Pisgah corridor, this is the big landmark on the north side of your route — the kind of place that reminds you the Appalachians are no joke even if they don’t look like the Rockies.
Access to the crest area is via NC Highway 128 off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Milepost 355. The road is paved but narrow and twisty. Mount Mitchell State Park at the summit has parking, a small visitor center, and seasonal ranger presence. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent. Best visited May through October — the high ridge gets socked in hard in winter and is regularly iced out. This is a fuel-and-intel stop, not a campground.
