Davy Crockett National Forest Sandy Creek Loop

Piney woods logging roads and creek crossings

Moderate

This 28-mile loop cuts through the heart of the Davy Crockett National Forest, following old logging roads that connected timber operations in the 1920s. You’ll cross Sandy Creek multiple times on concrete fords, weave through stands of towering longleaf pines, and pass remnants of sawmill foundations near the Neches Bottom area. The route connects Forest Service Roads 511, 217, and 247, with the trickiest section being the soft sand crossings near Kickapoo Creek where momentum is your friend.

This is moderate terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and sand sections, though stock vehicles with decent ground clearance can handle it dry. Best run spring through fall when water levels are manageable. No permits needed on USFS roads. Dispersed camping is allowed, and you’ll find decent cell service on the ridges. It’s classic East Texas overlanding — not technical rock crawling, but genuine backcountry through timber country that most Texans never see.
