Seneca Rocks — Spruce Knob Scenic Highway Summit Overlook
You can’t miss Seneca Rocks. The twin quartzite blades jut straight up from the valley floor on US-33 and WV-28, and they’ll stop you cold if you haven’t seen them before. The Discovery Center at the base has restrooms, trail maps, and a ranger on duty most days. The short walk to the base of the rock gives you a full upward view of the climbing routes. This is a legitimate landmark on the Trans-America Trail and a solid waypoint for any Pocahontas County run — fuel at Seneca Rocks is close, and it’s your last reliable intel stop before heading into the deeper Monongahela backcountry.
The viewpoint off US-33 is free, open year-round, and accessible to any vehicle. The Discovery Center is typically staffed spring through fall. Cell signal here is Spotty at best — get your comms done before you head deeper into the Allegheny Highlands. Climbing permits are not required for the viewpoint.
Eastern USA's most dramatic rock formation.
