East Texas Piney Woods Backcountry Loop
Deep woods solitude on forgotten logging roads.
The East Texas Piney Woods hide a network of forgotten forest service roads and old logging trails that weave through dense pine and hardwood forests. This loop combines County Road 4025 with several unnamed forest roads, crossing Neches River tributaries and passing abandoned logging camps from the 1940s. The real test comes at Piney Creek, where spring rains can turn a modest water crossing into a muddy gamble.
Moderate difficulty with a few technical spots where creek beds have washed out rocky ledges. Any stock 4WD can handle dry conditions, but wet weather demands higher clearance and possibly recovery gear. Best tackled spring through fall when creeks are manageable. No permits needed on most routes, but check with Angelina National Forest for seasonal closures. Dispersed camping allowed in designated areas. You’ll earn solitude in some of Texas’ last big woods and maybe spot a black bear if you’re quiet enough.
