Barnhart to Sheffield Backcountry Route
Lost oil roads through unforgiving canyonlands.
This 85-mile network of ranch roads and forgotten oil field tracks cuts through some of Texas’s most unforgiving country—the limestone canyonlands between the Pecos and Devils rivers. Originally blazed by ranchers moving cattle and later by oil crews chasing black gold, these routes thread through deep draws, across windswept mesas, and past abandoned drilling sites now reclaimed by prickly pear and cenizo. Independence Creek’s spring-fed pools appear like mirages in this harsh landscape, offering the only reliable water for miles.
Difficult terrain requiring 4WD and recovery gear—the limestone can be razor-sharp on tires, and flash floods turn dry washes into torrents within minutes. Navigation skills essential as GPS often fails in the deep canyons. Best attempted October through March when temperatures are tolerable. No permits required, but much of the route crosses private ranch land—respect gates and property boundaries. Fuel up in Ozona; there’s nothing out here but jackrabbits and roadrunners. This is Texas at its most uncompromising and authentic.
